We report recent results of our investigations of the stability of thin current sheets by three-dimensional kinetic plasma simulation and derive in situ observable signatures of their most probable decay modes. Looking through CLUSTER data obtained during tail passages of the four s/c we selected cases of thin current sheet traversals. Analysing the multi-spaccraft data we could verify the instability signatures predicted by simulations.
