A silicon pad-detector was installed in 2001 as part of the Backward Silicon Tracker (BST) of the H1 experiment. It allows level-1 triggering on charged particles in the backward region of H1. The talk describes the physics tasks, the apparatus design, the principle of its operation and first data taken at HERA.
