LENS: the prototype phase — •Dario Motta, Stefan Schönert, Thierry Lasserre, Frank, Xavier Hartmann, Christian Buck, Hardy Simgen, Till Kirsten, Wolfgang Hampel, Jurgen Kiko, Ute Schwan, and Gerd Heusser — MPI für Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, D-69117, Heidelberg, Germany

LENS (Low Energy Neutrino Spettroscopy) is a project for sub-MeV, real time, energy resolved, flavour specific solar ν e detection, currently in a pilot R&D phase, with a prototype being installed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy.

I first briefly summarize the main reasearch activities on this project carried out at the MPIK in Heidelberg. Then I focus on the status and the features of the “LENS Low Background Facility” (LLBF) at Gran Sasso. The aim of the LLBF is to run a prototype in an ultralow background environment, in order to test the detector’s concept and performances, and eventually to prove the feasibility of the LENS experiment. The scientific program of the LLBF is presented and the future milestones for the LENS project are briefly outlined.
