Monitoring of the chlorine activation in the arctic stratosphere by GOME — •Sven Kühl, Walburga Wilms-Grabe, Steffen Beirle, Michael Grzegorski, Jens Hollwedel, Thomas Wagner, Mark Wenig, and Ulrich Platt — Institut für Umweltphysik, Universität Heidelberg,D-69120 Heidelberg

Slant column densities (SCD) of OClO are derived from UV/vis absorption measurements made by the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME). Because of the good temporal and spatial resolution, GOME observations are well suited for the continuous monitoring of the stratospheric chlorine activation.

Here we present OClO-SCDs for the Arctic winter 2001/02. Due to an early cooling of the stratosphere in mid-November, strongly enhanced OClO values are found already at the beginning of December. In the mid of December, stratospheric temperature minima at the level of Tpot = 475 K drop below 190 K and lead to an increasing chlorine activation with OClO-SCDs above 1.3*10e14 molec/cm2.

We present SCDs of OClO for the period from November 2001 till April 2002 and discuss these observations with respect to the resulting stratospheric ozone depletion. We compare these findings to GOME OClO-observations of six previous arctic winters (1995/96 to 2000/01).
