Direct observation of charge transfer reactions by means of cluster surface collisions — •Christoph Gebhardt, Thomas Witte, Hartmut Schröder, and Karl-Ludwig Kompa — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Hans-Kopfermann-Str. 1, 85748 München

Large molecular clusters can be employed as tiny reaction chambers in which charge transfer reactions like proton transfer or electron transfer can take place. Yet, the mutual shielding of the generated charge carriers prohibits their direct mass spectrometric observation. The separation of binding energy scales in molecular clusters, namely intermolecular vs. intramolecular bond strength, allows to fragment the cluster with a low energy surface collision without changing the chemical nature of its constituents. In this way, the CT ions are separated and become accessible to mass spectrometry. We demonstrate this new technique using the example of an autoprotolysis reaction within a molecular cluster.
