Diffractive binary linear beamsplitters can be used for many applications and are comparatively easy to fabricate. Because the well-known Dammann gratings have limited diffraction efficiencies and also small-sized features which makes it still difficult to fabricate them, a direct binary search method has been developed and used to compute elements which have higher diffraction efficiencies (>80%) and other properties necessary for certain applications like e.g. well-defined DC peak intensity or high SNR. Moreover, due to the increased size of the smallest feature ot the gratings the fabrication is remarkably easier. For several examples, the fabrication steps for the master element and also the replication process for the production of higher numbers of elements are explained and discussed and the measured optical function of the obtained optical elements is compared with the simulations.
