Strong violett and blue upconversion-emission from erbium-doped ZBLAN-fibers — •Sebastian Ferber, Volker Gäbler, and Hans J. Eichler — Optical Institute, Technical University Berlin, Str. d. 17. Juni 135, D-10623 Berlin, Germany

Violet (402nm) and blue (470nm) upconversion with powers of several 10µW from Er3+:ZBLAN fibers under red laser pumping have been obtained. Efficient red-to-violet and red-to-blue upconversion emission was found using laser diodes at 638nm, a helium-neon-laser at 633nm, and a DCM-dye-laser. The optimal excitation wavelength was about 638nm. At this wavelength the upconversion emission exhibited a clearly sub-cubic dependence of the pump power indicating saturation of the excited states absorption (ESA) due to insufficient supply by ground state absorption (GSA) even at low pump powers of some mW. A correction to the upconversion excitation scheme in Er3+:ZBLAN is proposed.
