Recently, trapping and guiding neutral atoms in the close vicinity of material objects (atom chips) has received increasing interest, and numerous new experiments have been set up. Here, we present various new experiments showing the versatility of our atom chip: We have successfully used a structure as small as 1µm× 1µm to trap atoms magnetically, allowing us to reach distances between trapped atoms and the surface in the single micron regime. To show that atoms can not only be guided along one dimension as it is the case for single wire guides, we have implemented a curved two-wire guide. In a different two wire system, we have demonstrated a time-dependent beam splitter where a trapped atom cloud is split and recombined as an external magnetic bias field is ramped up and down. Finally, an experiment in progress is intended to show that electric fields in addition to the magnetic interaction can be used to trap atoms.
