Experiments dealing with neutral atoms near material surfaces (atom chips) are currently in progress in many laboratories. For the success of the concept of an atom chip it will be of great importance to be able to manipulate the atomic waves coherently.

Here, we present a scheme to prove coherent transport by an interferometric technique. As opposed to other proposals our interferometer does not rely on a single mode matter wave source (BEC). In idealized model calculations [1] it has been demonstrated that high contrast fringes will be observable for a thermal, i.e. multi mode source. In addition to these calculations, we consider imperfections and how they alter the interference pattern in a realistic experiment on an atom chip. The current status of the experiment will be discussed.
