Nonlinear optics with maximum coherence and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT): analytical solution of the field propagation problem — •Evgeny A. Korsunsky, Klaas Bergmann, and Michael Fleischhauer — Fachbereich Physik, Universitaet Kaiserslautern

We present analytical solutions for the propagation of fields in nonlinear-optical frequency conversion in resonant atomic vapours. The solution is based on an Hamiltonian approach where Maxwells equations are reduced to Hamiltonian equations of canonical mechanics. This allows us to find several integrals of motion and general expressions for the spatial dependence of the field intensities. Optimal conditions for maximum conversion efficiency are identified. In particular, we find that the recently proposed maximum coherence- and EIT-based schemes, although not providing the maximum possible overall power conversion efficiency, ensure best conversion that occurs for a small medium density-length product. The process is very robust with respect to phase mismatch and to variations of temporal and transversal spatial profiles of the pump pulses. E.A.K. is supported by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
