A pulsed dye laser-system has been developed to provide pulsed (ns), tunable, nearly transform-limited radiation in the visible and near-ultraviolet spectral region. The SLM dye laser oscillator (Sandia National Laboratory) consists of a wavelength-selective grazing-incidence grating resonator in Littman type configuration involving cavity length and beam pointing stabilization. The output of the dye laser oscillator is amplified in a pulsed-dye amplifier (PDA, Spectra Physics) to yield pulse energies up to 10 mJ. The dye laser oscillator and amplifier are pumped either by the second or third harmonic frequency of a transform-limited Nd:YAG laser (Rofin-Sinar, type MOPA LP4, pulse duration 12 ns at 1064 nm). The generated radiation can subsequently be frequency-converted to the far-ultraviolet spectral region (200 to 300 nm). We discuss the properties of the single-mode dye laser-system and demonstrate single-mode tunability over a wavelength range of several 10 GHz, thus permitting applications involving coherent excitations in a large variety of atomic and molecular systems.
