Generation of supershort optical pulses using molecular phase modulation — •Georg Korn and Mikalai Zhavoronkov — Max-Born-Institut, Max-Born-Str. 2A, 12489 Berlin

Pulses below 4fs have been generated using an impulsively excited Raman-active gas. A first intense pulse generates a strong molecular vibration. A second delayed pulse which is shorter than the molecular vibrational period experiences a strong phase modulation due to the fast refractive index change induced by the molecular motion. The additionally by molecular phase modulation generated frequency components could be compressed with chirped mirrors only.
