Issues of Iterated Transportation Simulations — •Kai Nagel and Bryan Raney — Computer Science; ETH Zurich

Transportation simulations do not only consist of the micro-simulation, where the vehicles move through the system somewhat similar to a molecular dynamics simulation, but also of other modules which generate routes, daily activity patterns, etc. It is common to iterate between these modules until they are consistent. We will report experiences of such iterations in the context of large scale simulations of all of Switzerland. In particular, we will report difficulties which come from the fact that in such a scheme, travelers’ plans are pre-computed, i.e. although they can adapt “day-to-day”, they cannot addapt “within-day”.
