FT-IR spectroscopic studies on the reorientation of ferroelectric liquid crystals in a thermoreversible gel network — •Jan Prigann1, Christian Tolksdorf2, Holger Skupin1, Rudolf Zentel2, and Friedrich Kremer11University of Leipzig, Faculty of Physics — 2Univerity of Mainz, Faculty of Chemistry

Time-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy with polarised light is employed to study the structure and mobility of chiral liquid crystals in mixtures with thermoreversible gels as a function of gel former concentration. The latter was kept below 2 mass%. The formation of the gel stabilises the structure and orientation of the liquid crystals while maintaining - for gel former concentration < 1 mass% - its mobility comparable to the pure compound. Applying an external electric field during the formation of the gel makes it possible to imprint a preferred orientation of the liquid crystals in the mixture [1]. This results in a memory effect similarly to the one observed in liquid crystalline elastomers [2].
