Investigation of the degradation processes influencing the single pixel addressing in electroluminescent passive matrix displays during real mode operation — •Dessislava Sainova and Armin Wedel — Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research, Geiselbergstrasse 69, D-14476 Golm, Germany

In the fast developing field of passive matrix display technologies the stability and the image quality are of a vital importance. Therefore the precise addressing of single pixels in real mode continuous operation is particularly essential. This aspect is significantly influenced by the resistivities assigned to the different layers constituting the devices. The result is a rise of a so-called crosstalk effect due to which pixels that are not directly addressed become activated. In order to characterize the crosstalk effect we performed an investigation of the resistivity and the degradation changes during operation in continuous real mode conditions of the two layers included in the matrix devices - conductive coating for the ITO electrode and the emissive structure. The measurements comprised single layer sample configurations as well as complete matrix structures. The materials investigated were PEDT:PSS and PANI as ITO-pre-coating and different polymer structures as EL emitters. It has been found that under continuous operation leads to an enhanced crosstalk resulting in gradual activation of numerous not directly addressed pixels.
