Dielectric and gas transport properties of polypropylene-clay nanocomposites — •M. Boehning, A. Tidjani, O. Wald, G. Turky, H. Goering, B. Schartel, and A. Schoenhals — Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung, Unter den Eichen 87, D-12205 Berlin

Polymer-layered-silicate nanocomposites show remarkable property improvements (increased tensile properties, decreased gas permeability, decreased solvent uptake, increased thermal stability and fire retardancy) when compared to conventionally scaled composites. For designing new materials with desirable, predicted properties, a better understanding of the structure property relationships is necessary. Polymer-clay nanocomposites are prepared from commercially available polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride and two different clay systems (layered silicates modified with organic cations). X-ray experiments show that the composites have an exfoliated structure. The gas transport properties (permeation and sorption) of the prepared nanocomposites are investigated for two different gases in a broad temperature range. Gas permeability is reduced by 50 systems. In addition dielectric measurements are carried out for the same systems to obtain information about the molecular mobility which should be related to the gas transport properties. The results of both experiments are compared.
