Laser and X-ray pump-probe scheme for studies of photochemistry in solution — •Anton Plech1, Monique Martin2, Rudolf Randler1, Simone Techert3, and Michael Wulff11ESRF, BP 220, F-38043 Grenoble — 2UMR ENS CNRS 8640, 24 rue Lhomond, F- 75231 Paris Cedex 05 — 3MPI für biophysikalische Chemie, D-37070 Göttingen

Ultrafast laser systems have enabled the studies of reaction kinetics of molecules in solution. While optical spectroscopy can address electronical states of the photexcitation steps, it can not unambigously determine structural reorientations. By using stroboscopical techniques of probing structural changes by x-ray scattering synchronized to excitation by intense femtosecond pulses a time resolution in the picosecond range can be obtained. We will present the latest developments of the technique at the European Synchrotron Radiation source ESRF as well as results of photoexcitation of small molecules in solution.
