Solvation Dynmaics of Hydrogen Bonding Solutes — •Dzmitry Starukhin, Frank Cichos, and Christian von Borczyskowski — Institut für Physik 122501, TU Chemnitz, 09107 Chemnitz

We study the solvation of hydrogen bonding solutes (Resorufin, Coumarins) in different solvents and solvent mixtures. The studied Coumarins show a mainly dipolar Stokes shift in pure protic solvents. However, we find in extensive steady state and time resolved studies of Coumarins in mixtures of protic and aprotic solvents as for instance in alcohol/alkane that the structure of the solvation shell is mainly determined by the hydrogen bonding ability of the Coumarin. On the other hand, the solvation dynamics is still of dipolar nature. Resorufin is found to form aggregates when dissolved in aceton or other aprotic solvents. The aggregate absorption and emission drastically differs from the nonaggregated form. The aggregates are appearently destroyed when adding small amounts of protic solvents as i.e. water. First femtosecond transient absorption data will be presented for resorufin.
