We investigated the kinetics of the microdomain alignment of lamellar and cylindric block copolymer solutions (e.g. polystyrene-b-polyisoprene in toluene) under the influence of an external electric DC field by in-situ Synchrotron-SAXS.

Our results show that the orientation kinetics can be fitted by a simple exponential law with time constants varying from a few seconds to some minutes depending on the polymer concentration, the electric field strength and the difference in the dielectric constants of the blocks.

From the experimental results we can determine an optimum set of parameters which allows improved preparation of highly anisotropic bulk polymer samples.
