Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) is well established for the preparation of metallic multilayers. Nevertheless, the interface structure of these multilayers depends on various parameters like particle energy, residual gas pressure, deposition rate etc. and is not yet completely understood. The objective here was to study the microstructure of the interfaces developing during the deposition process of Fe/Ag multilayers (5-20 nm periods). In order to understand the growth kinetics and the mobility of the elements we have used enriched 57Fe marker layers at different positions inside the natural Fe layers. Thus, employing Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (CEMS) additional subspectra were resolved in the multilayers, confirming the presence of Ag atoms in the Fe layers and of Fe atoms in the Ag layers. The relative areas of the different surroundings suggest that the diffusivity of Fe in Ag is higher than that of Ag in Fe. In-situ AES during the deposition process confirms this finding [1]. XRD shows larger lattice spacings and the interface roughness. The results are discussed in relation to the processing parameters.
