Stochastic Resonance of a Linear System in the Adiabatic Limit — •Oliver Strebel — Handjerystr. 31, 12159 Berlin

A simple approximation scheme for Fokker-Plank equations of periodically driven systems will be presented. In the limit of small frequencies and small amplitudes of the driving force a simple expression for the response of the system is derived. Within this framework the phenomenon of stochastic resonance is well reproduced for the case of the paradigmatic double well potential.

However, the analytic expressions for the exspectation values suggest that stochstic resonance should also occur in certain linear systems with continuously differentiable potentials. There resonance curves similar to those of the double well potential can be calculated. This demonstrates that in the adiabatic limit stochastic resonance arises not necessarily from a bistability of the system.

The inverse problem of stochastic resonance, i.e. the calculation of potentials for the stochastic motion from resonance curves, is also briefly mentioned.
