Macroscopic theory for microscopic particle systems — •Stefan Luding — DelftChemTech, Julianalaan 136, 2628 BL Delft, The Netherlands

Unlike normal fluids and gases, granular media resist the attempt to describe them as hydrodynamic, macroscopic fluids. This is due to the dissipative nature of the particle interactions and also due to the lack of scale separation - i.e. the particles are only one or two orders of magnitude smaller than the typical system. Based in discrete particle simulations and kinetic theory, the hydrodynamic flow behavior of compressive and dissipative granular gases is examined for homogeneous colling and shear flows. The traditional results are extended towards higher densities and multi-component mixtures. Special situations like clustering, segregation, and shock-waves are discussed.
