5-,3- and 2- fold surfaces of icosahedral alloys — •Zorka Papadopolos1 and Peter Pleasants21Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Tbingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 14, D-72076 Tübingen — 2Dept. of Math. and Comp. Sci., Uni-South Pacific, Suva, Fiji

According to Mermin et al. [Phys. Rev. B35 5487 (1987)] icosahedral alloys could appear as No-dqprimitiveNo-dq, No-dqface-centeredNo-dq or No-dqbody-centeredNo-dq phases, meaning that the modules are obtained by icosahedral projection of the Z6, D6 or D6* six-dimensional lattices, respectively. We are interested in the surface characteristics of these 3 phases. The densities of the atomic positions in the 2-fold, 3-fold and 5-fold planes are governed by the module and by the window. If we suppose that the window is a sphere, or a polytope very similar to a sphere, then the module is the major influence in defining the density of the planes both in the bulk-model and on the surface of an alloy, if there is no reconstruction. We give the relative densities of these planes for all three phases.
