Growth of Fe3O4 on the Fe(110)/Mo(110)/Al2O3(1120) Substrate — •M. Fonine, Yu. S. Dedkov, U. Rüdiger, and G. Güntherodt — II. Physikalisches Institut RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen

Recently, a high negative spin polarization of -80% at the Fermi level EF was measured at room temperature in the system Fe3O4(111)/Fe(110)/W(110) by means of spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy [1], which makes Fe3O4(111) a promising material for magnetoelectronic devices. The investigation of the surface structure of Fe3O4(111) not grown on W(110) substrates is critical for investigating the spin-polarized transport effects in Fe3O4/insulator/Fe3O4 systems.

The surface structure of in situ oxidized 200 Å thick epitaxial Fe(110) films grown on Al2O3(1120) substrates using a Mo(110) buffer layer has been studied by means of low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). For oxygen exposure of 100 L followed by annealing at 775 K the formation of FeO(111) was observed. After high oxygen exposures (≥1500 L) and annealing at 975 K we obtained Fe3O4(111) films of high crystalline quality. Atomically resolved STM images of the Fe3O4(111) surface show hexagonal symmetry with 6 Å periodicity. The system was identified as an epitaxial Fe3O4(111)/Fe(110) bilayer.
