We present a theoretical first principles study of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) from a Ni/Cu(001) bilayer, based on the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method with the additional implementation of spin-orbit coupling. On the basis of the modified set of eigenstates and eigenvalues the transition matrix elements and SHG susceptibility tensors are evaluated. Using the surface-sheet model we calculate intensity spectra of the SHG light, reflected by the Ni/Cu(001) bilayer, magnetized perpendicularly to the surface and for in-plane magnetization (polar and longitudinal magneto-optical configurations respectively). The spectral dependences of the SHG susceptibility tensor elements as well as the nonlinear Kerr rotation for both magnetization directions, and the azimuthal dependences of the SHG intensities for the main reflection geometries are presented for the Ni/Cu(001) bilayer. Our results show that the magnetic (odd on magnetization) elements of the SHG susceptibility tensors for both magneto-optical configurations are smaller than the nonmagnetic (even on magnetization) ones by only one order of magnitude, which confirms the large influence of magnetic properties on the optical characteristics of SHG light.
