Investigating the spin dynamics of magnetic nanostructures offers new aspects for ultrafast magnetization reversal in magnetic data storage devices.

We use photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) with laser excitation to study the spin dynamics of CoPt nanodot arrays. This setup allowes us to combine fs-laser based pump-probe techniques with nm spatial resolution microscopy. The demagnetization and spin manipulation induced by the pump laser pulse are obtained by analyzing the spin polarization of the photoelectrons emitted by the probe laser pulse.

Our results demonstrate that in CoPt nanodot arrays a laser pulse can induce a spinreorientation from the equilibrium out-of-plane direction to an in-plane orientation on a fs time scale. This phenomenon is due to a reduction of the magnetic anisotropy energy driven by the repopulation of electronic levels.

This illustrates a novel possibility to achieve magnetic switching in nanostructures on a fs time scale.
