Single Molecule Vibrational Spectroscopy. — •J.I. Pascual, Z. Song, J.J. Jackiw, G. Ceballos, H. Conrad, and H.-P. Rust — Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck Gesellschaft, Faradayweg 4-6, Berlin 14195, Germany

Inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy (ISTS) is able to resolve at the single molecular level either internal or external vibrational modes of an adsorbed molecule. Here, we will review our recent results on ISTS, and the information they provide about the excitation mechanisms. We persecute modifications in the vibrational spectra as a function of the adsorption state, local site, adsorbate-adsorbate interaction, and adsorption geometry and orientation, which are described by changes in the line-shape, the position, and even in the observation of initially non-active modes.
