The effect of island interaction and coalescence on stress distribution on metal surfaces is studied by means of quasi-ab initio molecular dynamics. We concentrate on mesoscopic Co islands on Cu(001). Atomic scale calculations reveal that the size-dependent mesoscopic mismatch is the driving force for stress relaxation in Co islands. A strongly inhomogeneous stress is induced at the island-substrate interface. Our calculations indicate a pronounced dependence of the island-induced stress on the island size. The island coalescence increases the tensile stress in the islands and decreases the stress in the layer underneath. We demonstrate that strain relaxation in Co islands leads to the recently observed stress oscillations during epitaxial growth of Co on Cu(001).
