Metallic Magnetism — •J. Kübler — Technische Universität Darmstadt

Density functional theory, in particular the local density approximation (LDA), supplies a coherent picture of magnetism in metals; the very electrons that conduct electricity and heat cooperate to form magnetic moments which can, in general, order in non-collinear arrangements. Viewed in reciprocal space (k-space) ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic order are but special cases of the set of non-collinear states. It has been known for quite some time that a great number of ground-state properties of magnetic systems are well described by the LDA. Now, excited-state properties like spin waves and the magnetic phase diagram can also be reliably calculated using non-collinear moment arrangements. A variety of examples are given: typical band structures, the phases of Cobalt, the Invar-mechanism, half metallic CrO2, the weak ferromagnet (and reported superconducting) ZrZn2, and multilayers.
