Characterization of the Growth of Perylene on Single Crystal Copper Surfaces — •Kathrin Hänel, Alexander Birkner, and Christof Wöll — Lehrstuhl für Physikalische Chemie I, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Universitätsstr. 150, 44780 Bochum

The adsorption of perylene (C20H12) on Cu(110) and Cu(111) was investigated with STM, LEED and XPS under UHV conditions. An effusion cell was used for the evaporation of the organic molecule, the flux was checked using a quartz crystal microbalance. In the case of the Cu(110) substrate we were able to image organic films with a thickness ranging from the submonolayer regime to multilayers with thicknesses exceeding 5 nm. An epitaxial growth of perylene was observed, leading to the formation of highly ordered organic films. In the monolayer regime ordered molecular chains orientated along the [1-10] direction of the Cu(110) substrate were observed. The results for the Cu(111)-surface reveal a significantly different behavior. In addition to STM, LEED and XPS measurements we will present measurements using tunneling spectroscopy in connection with the STM.
