The Influence of an Organic Substrate on Metal Work Function — •S. Park, A. Das, T.U. Kampen, and D.R.T. Zahn — Institut für Physik, Technische Universität Chemnitz, 09107 Chemnitz, Germany

In organic electronics, metals evaporated onto organic molecular films play an important role as one electrode for charge injection. The metal workfunction, one of the determining factors for the charge injection at the interface, varies depending on its morphology. The purpose of this work is to reveal how the morphology of metal electrodes is correlated with the molecular and crystalline structure of underlying organic molecular films.

Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) is employed during the growth of Ag on films of two perylene derivatives, dimethy-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (DiMe-PTCDI) and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). Different workfunction is revealed for the Ag films on the two different organic films. The crystalline structure of the underlying organic films and the evaporated Ag layers is investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). By comparing the workfunction and the crystalline structure of the underlying organic films and the metal layers, it is found that the crystalline structure of the evaporated metal films strongly depends on the crystalline structure of the underlying organic films.
