Charge-storing electret polymers, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), have long been used in commercial applications. However, the microscopic processes of charge storage are not yet well understood. To investigate trap depths and possible detrapping mechanisms, photostimulated discharge experiments of electron-beam and corona charged PTFE and polyethyleneterephthalate (PETP) films were performed. For PTFE, the spectra show the onset of a strong photocurrent (up to several 100 pA) at wavelengths below 270 nm. Charge-density profiles recorded with the piezoelectrically generated pressure step (PPS) method show that photo-bleaching at 230 nm results in a quantitative depopulation of near-surface charges, whereas only partial detrapping could be achieved for bulk charges.
