Preparation and characterisation of heterocyclic benzidine analogues as new charge-transport materials — •Horst Hartmann — FH Merseburg

The use of conjugated polymers as materials with a high electric conductivity is well-documented. In common, these compounds, such as PPV, PPP, or PTh, can be prepared by means of simple methods. However, these products contain usually several impurities their concentration depends on the synthetic methods used for their preparation. Because impurities negatively influences the electric conductivity of the appropriate materials they have to be removed before using the material. In common, this problem is difficult to perform.

Therefore, small molecules, such as compounds of the so-called benzidine or starburst type, have been alternatively used. Because these compounds were usually prepared by means of heavy-metal catalysts they contain also impurities their separation is urgent necessary and also rather difficult to perform.

Now we have found that several heterocyclic analogues of the benzidine and starburst type, such as N-perarylated 2-aminothiophenes and 5,5-diamino-2,2-bithiophenes, can be prepared without using any heavy-metal catalyst. Thus, these compounds can be obtained in very pure manner with high yields mostly. Application tests of these heterocyclic compounds as hole or electron transport materials in, e.g., light-emitting diodes exhibit their suitability for such uses.
