The efficiency and brightness of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has been enhanced essentially since the first demonstration of efficient OLEDs in 1987 by Tang et al.. The optimization of the device structure plays an important role in this context.

Here, we show the results of our investigation of blue emitting (PPCP as emitter) multilayer OLEDs with several electron transport layers like Alq, PBD, BBOT and F-OXD. The effect of these electron transport layer on the electro-optical performances of the OLEDs was studied. The results indicate that the performance of devices greatly improves by adding an electron transport layer between the emitter and the cathode layer. We found that the device structure with Alq as electron transport layer (ITO/TPD/PPCP/Alq/Al) is optimal as compared with the other devices of this study. Its turn-on voltage is 4V. The maximal brightness is 2000cd/m2 and its maximal luminous efficiency is 0.36lm/W.
