We report the development of a solar cell based on regio-regular polythiophene (poly3 hexylthiophene- 2,5diyl) mixed with a soluble fullerene derivative PCBM (phenyl-C61-butyric acid methylester) as a strong acceptor.

Electrical properties such as short circuit current, open circuit voltage, fill factor and efficiency have been measured under different temperature and light intensity conditions. The maximum values for the main parameters which have been obtained are for an open circuit voltage 0.6V, a current density of 1.28mA/cm2, a fill factor of 39,7% and a power conversion efficiency of 0.33%. Efficiency and fill factor show a maximum around 3mA/cm2. This conclusion demonstrates a limitation of the transport bulk properties, similar to the behaviour reported in the literature for amorphous solar cells.

The dependence of the main parameters on temperature has demonstrated an optimum around room temperature (300K). At low temperatures, transport of charge carriers is limited. High temperature might have an influence upon the morphology of the polymer chain, leading to a decrease in the conductivity as was observed by us.
