The surface treatment of polymers within a plasma is common for industrial applications. To understand the whole process more precisely the occurring reactions can be separated with ion-, electron- and UV-treatment of the surfaces due to the inner parameter of our microwave plasma system. These inner parameters were measured by a Langmuir probe and other methods. The significant effects in the surface region were measured by high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In order to detect these reactions we have to label them and add special chemical groups which do not exist in the original sample. In our investigation we use two kinds of reactions:

- electrophilic substitution of bromine at double bonds [1]

- passivating of the radicals by nitrogen monoxide [2]

In the first case we detect with our measurements the concentration of bromine, in the second case the chemical shift of the nitrogen binding energy for the resulting group.
