A new spintronic device has recently been proposed [1] which is constructed entirely from nanometre scale magnetic elements (* nanomagnets and which performs logic functions at room temperature. In keeping with many other spintronic devices, these magnetic logic gates require single domain magnetic elements with low coercivity. In this talk, the physics which controls these aspects of magnetic behaviour on the nanometre scale is described, with particular reference to a phenomenon known as configurational anisotropy. The magnetic logic architectures is then outlined, followed by an experimental report of working room-temperature AND gates only 100nm in size. The talk concludes with a description of the potential advantages of magnetic logic devices over conventional silicon microelectronics, which include a 40,000 times higher integration density than state-of-the-art CMOS while dissipating one million times less power.
