We concentrate our photoemission investigations on the single-layer material Bi2Sr2−xLaxCuO6+δ (Bi-2201) with one CuO2-plane per unit cell, and triple-layer material Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223). From both superconductors we are able to grow high-quality single crystals, whereas for the single-layer material the hole concentration in the CuO2-planes can be varied almost continuously from overdoping to the underdoping regime. In this contribution we present high-resolution photoemission results of the fine structure in the spectral function near the Fermi energy achieved on optimally doped Bi-2201. By polarization dependent photoemission a band splitting, not observed previously, could be extracted. With the experimental conditions at SRC we were able to measure the split bands directly in k-space along the ΓM direction near the M-point. In the context of different microscopic mechanisms proposed for high-Tc superconductivity, the observation of two bands along one direction in Bi-2201 points to correlated non-Fermi-liquid-like one-dimensional behaviour in the electronic structure of the two-dimensional CuO2-planes.
