We explain recent experimental results in the doping dependence of the spectral function, as observed in angle resolved photoemission in high temperature superconducting cuprates. Within our model quasiparticles are coupled to the resonant spin fluctuation mode observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. We show that, although the weight of the spin fluctuation resonance is small, quasiparticle self energy effects are strong. In agreement with experiments we obtain a quasiparticle renormalization factor which scales as a function of doping approximately with the superconducting transition temperature. We give an explanation within our model for the fact that in the underdoped region excitations become more and more incoherent, whereas in the overdoped region quasiparticles stay well defined.
