There is a considerable interest in extending the repetition rate capabilities of a high voltage switch while maintaining low switching times. To investigate the physical behaviour of spark gaps which are not operated in a high current or extremely high voltage mode (high energy modes) but to concentrate on achievable switching cycles per second at a low energy operating mode- a principle experiment was configured, conducted and analysed. The paper will discuss the analytical approach based on common spark gap characteristics and physical limitations if operated at high energy mode like recovery time and dominant factors. Derived on the analytical approach a simple test set up with two electrodes where the electrode distance can be varied will be illustrated. The test objectives and the test procedure and the test operating conditions will be described. The initial test results will be discussed with respect to macroscopic and microscopic aspects. At the end an outlook will be given for further investigations.
