A 2.5 MV pulser for GV/m acceleration of femtosecond electron bunches — •Dmitry Vyuga, Marieke de Loos, Jom Luiten, and Seth Brussaard — Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Department of Applied Physics, P.O. Box 513, 5600 MB Eindhoven, The Netherlands

For the acceleration of very short, high brightness (100 fs, 1 kA, 1 π mm mrad emittance) electron bunches it is necessary to suppress the deteriorating effect of space charge forces in the bunch. This can be achieved by acceleration to relativistic energies in an electric field with a high gradient (GV/m). To prevent breakdown caused by such a high field, a pulser was constructed consisting of a Tesla transformer, a laser-triggered spark gap and a pulse forming line to produce 2.5 MV pulses of 1 ns duration. Results of recent tests of this unique device are presented. Particle tracking simulations are presented that show it is possible to produce 2 MeV electron bunches with 1.2 kA peak current, 73 fs duration and 0.4 π mm mrad emittance .
