Plasma sterilisation of polymer fols by means of a cascaded discharge setup — •Oliver Franken1, Thomas Lierfeld1, Michael Heise2, and Willi Neff2 — 1Lehrstuhl f"ur Lasertechnik, RWTH Aachen, Aachen, Germany — 2Fraunhofer Institut Lasertechnik, Aachen, Germany
Investigations of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasmas and excimer UV lamps have shown that the UV light represents the main pathway for sterilisation of thermally sensitive polymer foils made of PET. To increase the UV exposure of the samples we have built up a new cascaded setup which combines different ty-pes of flat excimer UV sources and a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). In compa-rison to normal DBD setups we have measured a significant increase of efficiency in inactivation of spores of bacillus subtilis. This may be due to an additional steri-lising effect of plasma radicals next to UV light.
