Helium line ratios for diagnostics of plasma parameters in different types of discharges — •S. Riegg, U. Fantz, and K. Behringer — Lehrstuhl für Experimentelle Plasmaphysik, Institut für Physik, Universität Augsburg, Universitätsstr. 1, D - 86135 Augsburg

The line ratios of helium are used to investigate electron density, electron temperature and the influence of optical thickness. Therefore results of different helium discharges were compared: microwave and inductively coupled plasmas as well as results of the plasma edge of fusion experiments (ASDEX Upgrade) and an ICP for negative ion production. To observe the six lines of helium (n = 3 to n = 2 transitions) simultaneously, the recently developed Mechelle spectrometer was used. This spectrometer (ESA 3000) has the advantage to obtain the wide wavelength range from about 200 nm to 780 nm. Furthermore, it is a compact and robust system that allows measurements at different experiments and a direct comparison of the results with one device. This method provides a simple and fast identification of the preferred line ratios for diagnostics. In addition, it will be tested if admixtures of hydrogen have an influence on the investigated line ratios.
