Measurement of the Electron Temperature and Density in Recombining Plasmas — •Dennis Schröder, Uwe Wenzel, Werner Bohmeyer, and Bernd Koch — Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Bereich Plasmadiagnostik, EURATOM Ass., 10117 Berlin, Germany

The electron temperature and electron density from a recombining divertor plasma are measured by means of Langmuir probes as well as various spectroscopic methods. However, the results obtained in practice can differ substantially. [1]

These differences motivated us to conduct comparative measurements in the plasmagenertor PSI-2 over the last year. We created a plasma discharge which is comparable to a recombining divertor plasma but with a reduced magnetic field strength (B=0.2 T instead of 2.5 T).

The results are summarized as follows: firstly, it is possible to reliably measure the electron temperature in a cold plasma (Te≤ 1.3 eV) by Langmuir probes and secondly, spectroscopic methods and Langmuir probes yielded the same plasma parameters in very good agreement.
