Theoretical study of pulsed high-pressure xenon discharges — •M. Wendt and H. Schneidenbach — INP Greifswald, Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Str. 19, 17489 Greifswald

The axially homogeneous arc column of atmospheric pressure wall-stabilized xenon discharges has been studied. The discharges were driven by a sinusoidal electrical current with periodically amplified single half cycles of varying height and recurrence frequency. The current form was adjusted to give a constant average power supply of 150 W. The energy balance with radiation transport has been solved numerically with the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium. The convection was neglected and a pressure constant in time and space was assumed. The transport properties of xenon were calculated in higher-order Chapman-Cowling approximation with recently published electron-atom collision cross-sections. The effect of pulse operation on the spectral distribution and the relation of line and continuum radiation has been analysed. Such investigations of high-pressure noble gas discharges become important for the development of modern high-intensity-discharge light sources, especially for mercury-free lamps. funded by the DFG (SCHN 671/1).
