New vision on rarefied plasma expansion — •Peter Vankan, Daniel Schram, Stéphane Mazouffre, Ivo Bakker, and Richard Engeln — Department of Applied Physics, Center for Plasma Physics and Radiation Technology, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Postbus 513, 5600 MB Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Plasma expansion from a source region to a recombining region leads to a supersonic expansion followed by a shock structure, which is assumed to be impenetrable. It appears from detailed velocity resolved fluorescence measurements that scattering in the supersonic expansion is possible at rarefied conditions, leading to a efficient mixing with injected and produced molecules in the periphery. Examples with H2 and N2 expanding plasmas are given on the basis of TALIF measurements of H and N atoms having equal results, if scaled by the mass factor. Consequences for fast surface modification and depostion are indicated.
