Tailored Plasma Treatment of Polymer Surface for Application in Life Science — •Marshal Dhayal1, K L Parry2, R D Short2, and J W Bradley11Physics Department, PO Box 88, UMIST, Manchester, M60 1QD, U.K. — 2Laboratory for Surface and Interface Analysis, Dept of Engineering Materials, University of Sheffield, Sheffield S1 3JD, U.K.

A new plasma reactor has been designed, based on a grid-separation scheme, to tailor the plasma properties at the surface of polymeric materials in the modification process. Ion flux and ion energies can be independently controlled in the plasma reactor. Polymer surfaces have been treated for a variety of different ion energies and fluxes, followed by acrylic acid grafting on to the surface in the same vessel. The level of polymer surface modification depends on plasma parameters and its subsequent effect on the acrylic acid grafting process are discussed.
