Pseudospark Switches - New Developments and Applications — •Isfried Petzenhauser, Jürgen Urban, Marcus Iberler, and Klaus Frank — Physics Department I, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg

Pseudospark switches are a promising alternative to other gas discharge switches, such as thyratrons or spark gaps. The pseudospark discharge is a low pressure gas discharge that is located on the left branch of the Paschen curve. Pseudospark switches combine the advantages of a high rate of current rise (> 1011 A/s), a low standby power (typ. 10-20 W) and a good lifetime (up to 108 discharges). The low standby power is due to the usage of a cold cathode. The symmetric design of the switch allows a reverse current ability up to 100%. For different applications, e.g. short pulse operation, high currents, etc. different geometries of the switch are used. The capabilities of the different types of pseudospark switches will be presented. The characteristic of the switch is also depending on the trigger. Therefore different triggers have been tested and will be compared.
