DETACHED RECOMBINING PLASMAS IN THE UMIST DIVERTOR SIMULATOR — •Kieran Gibson, Philippa Browning, and Branislav Mihaljcic — Dept of Physics, UMIST, PO box 88, Manchester M60 1QD, U.K.

We describe recent experiments on the UMIST Linear System in which the interaction between plasma and neutral gas is studied. The primary aim of this work is to investigate physical processes relevant to gas target divertors in Tokamaks. We investigate upstream plasma conditions (temperature and density) required to observe Electron Ion Recombination (EIR) or Molecular Activated Recombination (MAR). Both processes are believed to be of relevance to ‘detached’ regimes in divertor plasmas.

In previous work we sought to explain the experimental 1-D axial temperature and density profiles using a simplified 1-D model. However, a better understanding of the onset of EIR and MAR is required and a study is in progress to investigate the 2-D radial profiles for varying axial positions using spectroscopic methods.

New experiments using various combinations of plasma-neutral target gas (e.g. D–H or H–D) suggest that charge–exchange plays an important part in momentum loss.
