Hydrogen isotopes will be the fuelling gas in future fusion devices. A large amount of the gas will enter the plasma via recycling from wall components. In the boundary layer of high temperature plasmas, both atoms and molecules- including heteronuclear molecules like HD - play a role in the recycling process. In addition, also hydrocarbons have to be taken into account if graphite is used as a plasma-facing component. By means of emission spectroscopy, a characterisation of the species in dependence on the plasma-facing material and on the plasma conditions is performed. Experiments have been carried out to determine the ratio of deuterium atoms to molecules, in particular with varying surface temperatures TSurface. In addition, the total released particle flux is determined from the simultaneously performed Fulcher-band and Balmer-a spectroscopy. Calculations with the Monte-Carlo code Eirene have been performed to compare theoretical predictions with the actual experimental findings.
